Importing and Exporting Flashcards in Anki

I’ve decided to share some of my Anki decks and I realize that people, and I want to make sure that everyone who is interested in downloading them also knows how to import them. This quick guide describes the process using the desktop version on Anki.

Importing Anki Flashcards

Anki decks are in .apkg format (if you download any of mine, it’ll come as a .zip file, and you’ll need to extract that (right-click > extract) in order to get to the .apkg file). To import a deck into Anki, do the following:

  1. Open Anki Desktop
  2. Click the “Import File” button
  3. Navigate to and select the .apkg file
  4. Click “Open”
  5. You should get a popup that says “104 cards imported” (or whatever number of cards were in that deck)

Exporting Anki Flashcards

  1. Open Anki Desktop
  2. For the deck that you wish to export, click the black down-arrow next to the gear icon
  3. Select “Export”
  4. The default export options are generally fine, but you can alter them if you need to
  5. Click “Export…”
  6. Select the location to save the deck (keep in mind that the default locations is usually not intuitive. I suggest saving to the desktop)
  7. Click “Save”
  8. You should get a popup that says “104 cards exported” (or whatever number of cards were in that deck)
